Thomas I. Atkins, born March 2, 1939, in Elkhart, Ind., became IU's first African American student body president in 1960 and also was the first African American student body president in the Big Ten. All residents of the Thomas I. Atkins Living Learning Center (Atkins LLC) are required to enroll in the Atkins Community Development Course, COLL-G113: Groups Success Seminar. This seminar is a one-credit course that meets Monday evenings from 7:00pm to 8:15pm and is taught by a Peer Instructor who lives in Atkins. It will introduce students to the purpose and goals of Atkins, their fellow Atkins members, local and national African American culture and issues, IU resources, basic study skills, their goals at IU and their particular role in the Atkins LLC.
